<p>The unit was established in January 1963 and operated the C-119 at Ellington AFB as the 924th TCG under the control of the 446th TCW. The unit was redesignated as the 924th TAG in July 1967 and converted to the C-130A in March 1968. The 924th was responsible for both the 704th and 705th TAS. The group transferred to the 433rd TAW in July 1972 and moved to Bergstrom AFB in 1976, when it upgraded to the C-130B. The training role was assigned to the 705th TATS in July 1972 until it was inactivated in mid-1976. The group switched to the tactical fighter role in July 1981, becoming the 924th TFG with assignment to the 482nd TFW operating the F-4D. The unit upgraded to F-4E in January 1989 and re-equipped with the F-16C in 1991.
